The 7 Chakras Explained: How to Balanced and Activate Your Energy Centers

Let’s talk energy. Not the kind that comes from caffeine (although I get that too 😅), but the kind that flows through your body,  your life force. Your prana. If you’ve ever felt out of alignment, emotionally, physically, or spiritually, it could be connected to your chakras. Learning how to work with your chakras is a powerful way to tap into your energy body, release blocks, and reconnect with your power.

I’m going to walk you through the 7 main chakras, what they are, what they govern, and how to bring them back into balance. Don’t worry if you’re new to this - I’ve got you.

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are energy centers in the body. You can think of them like spinning wheels of energy that correspond to different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your life. When they’re balanced, you feel aligned, more connected, joyful, and in flow. When they’re blocked, you may feel off - tired, uninspired, stuck, or overwhelmed.

We have many chakras throughout the body, but the 7 main ones run along your spine, from the base to the crown of your head.

The 7 Chakras and How to Balance Them

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Color: Red
Location: Base of spine
Governs: Safety, security, grounding, basic needs

When this chakra is balanced, you feel grounded, secure, and connected to the present. When it’s out of balance, you might feel anxious, disconnected, or like you’re constantly in survival mode.

💫 Balance it:

  • Walk barefoot on the earth (yes, really)

  • Use grounding crystals like hematite or smoky quartz

  • Practice deep belly breathing

  • Say affirmations like “I am safe and supported.”

  • Eat root veggies like beets, carrots, and potatoes

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Color: Orange
Location: Below the navel
Governs: Creativity, pleasure, sexuality, emotional expression

This is your sensual, juicy, creative energy center. When it’s flowing, you feel pleasure, joy, and creative inspiration. When blocked, you may feel stuck, emotionally numb, or disconnected from joy.

💫 Balance it:

  • Dance (even if it's just in your kitchen)

  • Take a bath with essential oils like ylang-ylang or orange

  • Explore creative hobbies without pressure

  • Say: “I allow myself to feel pleasure and joy.”

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Color: Yellow
Location: Upper abdomen
Governs: Confidence, personal power, motivation

This is your fire center - your confidence, drive, and willpower live here. When it’s aligned, you feel empowered and decisive. When it’s blocked, you might feel insecure, stuck, or full of self-doubt.

💫 Balance it:

  • Move your body, especially core work or power yoga

  • Journal about what makes you feel powerful

  • Use affirmations like “I trust myself and take bold action.”

  • Eat yellow foods like bananas, corn, or pineapple

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Color: Green
Location: Center of chest
Governs: Love, compassion, connection

This chakra is all about love - for yourself and others. When open, you feel connected, kind, and emotionally available. When blocked, you may feel closed off, resentful, or overly self-sacrificing.

💫 Balance it:

  • Practice heart-opening yoga poses (like cobra or camel)

  • Send love to yourself and others during meditation

  • Use rose quartz or jade

  • Say: “I give and receive love freely.”

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Color: Blue
Location: Throat
Governs: Communication, truth, expression

When your throat chakra is aligned, you speak clearly and truthfully. When it’s blocked, you might struggle to express yourself or feel like your voice doesn’t matter.

💫 Balance it:

  • Sing (yes, in the shower counts)

  • Write down how you’re feeling

  • Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes

  • Use the affirmation: “My voice is powerful and needed.”

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Color: Indigo
Location: Between eyebrows
Governs: Intuition, insight, inner wisdom

This is your inner knowing. When open, your intuition is sharp, your thoughts are clear, and you trust your guidance. When blocked, you may feel confused, indecisive, or disconnected from your inner wisdom.

💫 Balance it:

  • Meditate (even 5 minutes can help)

  • Limit screen time and get still

  • Use crystals like amethyst or lapis lazuli

  • Say: “I trust my intuition and inner wisdom.”

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Color: Violet or white
Location: Top of the head
Governs: Spiritual connection, purpose, consciousness

This is your connection to the divine - your higher self, the universe, God (however you see it). When open, you feel supported, connected, and aligned with your purpose. When blocked, you may feel lost or spiritually disconnected.

💫 Balance it:

  • Spend time in silence or meditation

  • Practice gratitude

  • Connect to a higher power through prayer, ritual, or intention

  • Use affirmations like: “I am connected to the divine within me.”

How to Begin Working with Your Chakras

Start simple. You don’t need to work on all 7 chakras at once. Check in with yourself — where are you feeling the most blocked or off-balance?

You can:

  • Focus on one chakra per week

  • Do a short daily chakra meditation (there are lots on YouTube!)

  • Create a chakra journal to reflect on your experiences

  • Add chakra colors, crystals, or essential oils to your self-care routine

The key is to stay curious and kind with yourself. This isn’t about “fixing” anything - it’s about reconnecting with who you already are beneath the noise.

Final Thoughts

Your chakras are always working - always shifting and flowing.
The more you tune in and support them, the more aligned and empowered you’ll feel.

And remember, you don’t have to be “perfect” at energy work to benefit from it. Just bringing awareness to your energy centers is already a huge step toward healing, alignment, and growth.
